Oot Ower Lounge
The Oot Ower lounge is a new build which opened in November 2001. It is a family run establishment comprising an easy atmosphere, with pleasant and helpful occupants. Situated on the east side of Whalsay at Livister, it overlooks the Huxter loch, where the remains of a Broch can be seen clearly. The Island is ideal for family walks, trout fishing or bird watching - weather permitting of course. The Isle of Whalsey is 25 mins on a ferry from the mainland and has an abundance of natural wildlife and is home to Scotlands most northerly 18 hole golf course. The former home of the Scottish literary figure Hugh MacDiarmid is at Sodom, just along the road from the Lounge on the south east of the isle. The campsite at the lounge accepts all units. It has four electric hookups and a small area for tents. Accommodation is also provided in the form of 2 self catering chalet units each sleeping 4 comfortably, but booking is essential well in advance for the busy summer season. The lounge (closed Mon, Tue and Wed, also Thurs during the summer) offers refreshments and is open till late most evenings. The nearest shop is 1.5 miles and there is also a leisure centre with swimming pool and outdoor all weather pitch close by. Food is provided by means of a Chinese Restaurant on the premises. Meals are served in the dining room or as takeaways from 1pm to 10pm during opening hours. Booking is recommended (01806 566674)
