We stay here often, it's one of our favourite sites. It is part of the Foundation but that makes it all the more interesting. It is also located right next to RAF Kinloss. When we first started coming her 5 years ago, the Nimrods were still operational and the noise was incredible though exhilirating in a weirdy way. Since they have been decommissioned and the base is set to close and be used as army barracks it's now a lot quieter. Still it's amusing to see the plane spotters in their wee hide at the end of the runway!
The shop is fantastic, fresh artisan bread baked in the local bakery and all manner of other goodies and fresh organic produce from the local garden.
There are good loos, showers, washing up facilities and the laundry is up near the shop.
They say they never turn away anyone and we've never had any bother getting in.
Atmosphere is very relaxed and peaceful - perhaps some of those hippy vibes! There is a kids play area in the middle of the site and also up at the foundation itself. There is also a cafe and a snack bar. Very child friendly and pedestrians and cyclists are given precedent.
There is a 'Living Machine' greenhouse at the end of the site which processes the sewage from the foundation. Don't be put off by this. It just looks like any greenhouse, full of plants which feed ecologically on the waste material. No smell at all and very interesting.
The village is a short walk away or even shorter cycle where there is a grocery store, and the bakery. In addition, the Kimberly Inn is a nice pub with great food and the Old Bakehouse is owned by the Foundation and defintely worth a visit but is only open 10am-4pm which is a shame.
Another great place is the Captain's Rest up at the marina. Nice food, great views. Take the water taxi over to Culbin Forest and cycle for miles on forest tracks. Sailing and watersports courses are also offered here (min age 8 years).
The beach is fab and though the site is not right on it, it's easy to get to either walking through the dunes or to the village.
Forres is 3 miles away if you want more shops and supermarkets but try shopping local and capturing some of that Findhorn magic.
