Sligachan Campsite Skye

Situated at the head of Loch Sligachan next to the hotel. Seamus bar at the hotel does bar meals and serves real ale. This is the main site to the North of the Cuillins and is an ideal base for walking and climbing. For further info contact Sandy Coghill at the Sligachan Hotel on the above number.

Our View:	Visited in 2005 and was greatly impressed by the location under the Cuillins. Although regularly used by walkers and climbers the site also had many tourists and campervans just visiting. Modern clean facilities and small office area. Very helpful warden.

Sligachan Campsite Skye Firstly, a thank you to the warden who allowed us to keep our bags in the laundry room after we were stuck in a storm. Facilities are really great and clean. Site had a few walkers for the Cuillins as well as some motorhomes who just seemed to be passing through. The hotel across the road serves really good food (and they were also sympathetic to us being too wet to be able to go anywhere else and allowed us to stay there all day), but there are no shops (Portree is 9 miles away). Really atmospheric setting under the Cuillins and by the loch. It would've been a great base for us if we were to be walking, however, we were only passing through. Would suit a lot of people. £6 pppn was relative to what we had already paid in campsites with similar amount of facilities. Sligachan Campsite Skye I`ve been visiting the Sligachan site for years & always look forward to it with the terrific scenery & the Cuillins just across the Portree road,Just made for walking in. We find the layed-back atmosphere suits us but if you want more trimmings the Hotel is in sight. Some say the warden is a touch gruff but we think he`s down to earth with no Aires & graces & sociable enough. The midges can at times be horrendous but we just pull the mosquito blinds down in our motor home!. Last year at dusk we watched the tenters doing the war dance with waving arms & couldn`t help but sympathize, but spray on the Avon dry oil spray, on with the hiking boots and into the mountains & to hang with the midges. Sligachan Campsite Skye We used this site for the first time this year, and stayed a couple of nights. I read the review about the surly manager, and we found him to be very helpful, even loaning us some pegs to hang out the washing, although there were two of them we did find one more friendly than the other. The site is more like a free for all, pitch where you like, but we were comfortable and the water in the washrooms and showers was always nice and hot, although some prolonged janitorial skills might be employed from time to time. The hook up price we thought was a little steep for electric, and so opted for battery power on the second night. the sunset on the Cuillins was as good as Uluru or Wells Cathedral, truly amazing. Sligachan Campsite Skye We spend a few nights here in summer 07. My kids 9 and 10 loved every minute of this site and the play area at the pub, all kids are different, if your kids want play stations 24/7 don't waste your time they'll be bored. My two looked at it as an adventure even when the youngest one fell in the muddy water head first, my kids have requested a visit this summer so we will be returning and hopfully we'll get the better weather. The facilities are basic, but your camping, isn't that what you expect if not get a hotel! The one thing that did annoy me was a handful of irresponsible campers using the toilet block as a camp kitchen, and generally just dumping rubbish. The washing machine and dryer was a great bonus due to the weather we had, we didn't experience any midges I think it was to cool for them. The owner is a great guy, some might say grumpy, but he was great with the kids and tolerated a lot of rude people. We can't wait for our summer holidays this year back to Sligachan, O yes pub over the road is lovely too! Sligachan Campsite Skye Stayed on this site for 2 nights primarily for the location which is great for walking and has brilliant views across the hills. We would agree with other reviewers that this site is best suited to walkers or for short stays. It is plagued by midges and we played shower lottery - sometimes good, other times no more than a tantalising trickle. Payment was taken by a gruff attendant. Children loved the playground opposite complete with zip-wire, in front of a terrific bar (great on atmosphere, food, homebrew and 200 whiskies if that's your tipple). Sligachan Campsite Skye This is a good, no-frills campsite aimed, due to its position at the foot of the Cuillin Ridge, at walkers, climbers and other outdoor enthusiasts. As you'd expect the views from the site are awesome. The site is run in a fairly relaxed manner - you arrive, pitch up and at some point later someone will collect your camping fees. The facilities are basic but clean and well maintained. I had the odd water pressure problem with the shower but nothing too serious, but they were always warm. The midges can be a bit of an irritation especially after rain and when the wind drops, but that goes with the territory - if they're going to bother you don't go camping on Skye. There are no facilities as such for kids beyond wide open spaces, although the pub across the road does have a small children's play area. The aforementioned pub is a godsend after a day's walking or when the rain comes down (as it did for us quite a bit). It sells some excellent ales that are produced in its on-site brewery and a couple of hundred different scotch whiskies if you like that sort of thing. The food is reasonably priced and isn't too bad (in my experience, the simpler the meal, the better it was). The one thing that's missing is a shop, the lack of which means regular trips to Broadford or Portree to get basic supplies. I can't believe that neither the site itself nor the pub hasn't cottoned on to the captive market and opened one..... Sligachan Campsite Skye Last week in March 2006 we took our camper van over the now toll free bridge to Skye. First stop was Sligahan the camp site was shut! This was the case with all of the sites we came across in Skye, however we asked at reception "If we eat and drink in your bar tonight, can we stay on your car park?" The answer was "Yes, but you dont have to use the bar if you dont want too" Needless to say we spent a very good night at this superb location, the food was good if not spectacular, the company both locals and tourists staying at the hotel made it an evening to be remembered. Sligachan Campsite Skye This is a well situated camp site for travelling around this part of Skye. It's located on a crossroads with the roads north (Portree) and South (Kyle & crossing) and also the route over the West coast (Glenbrittle) right on the door step. Also handy for access to the Northern Cuillin hills. The site is a bit open however and prone to bogging down in the lower lying areas after heavy rain. It can be very midge ridden on still days (common to this part of the world). The Sligachan Inn, which is on the doorstep, has a good selection of beers and whiskies and does reasonably priced bar meals until late but other than that there is little else for miles around and little for children. For me this is a campsight for a night or two or to break up the journey through Skye rather than a long stay venue. The place to be on Skye In my opinion, this is the place to camp in Skye. You just roll up, pitch your tent and friendly warden appears to collect your money. Make sure you bring plenty supplies as there's not much here, just campsite, pub and fabulous Cuillin mountains. Daily weather reports are posted in reception window for those interested in getting out and about on foot. Toilets are clean and never once was there a queue for the showers which are hot and free (though mildew on shower curtains is little off putting), there's even a free hairdryer for those who (like me) suffer from 'camping hair'. There's not much in the way of top soil on some pitches, so bring your mallet, and can be a little exposed. But the stunning views and location more than make up for it. Can't praise this site enough, if you don't mind roughing it (just a little) then you can't ask for more than this. Sligachan At the beginning of June I was fortunate to visit the Isle of Skye. During my stay I spent two nights at the Sligachan Camp Site. This site is located centrally on the island between Broadford and Portree and therefore makes a good base for any visit. There were many walkers and climbers on site as the 'Cuillin' are close by. These also provide a spectacular backdrop for the camp site. There are great views all around the site and of course this means the site is very exposed. The ground is rather uneven and had suffered with the recent heavy rain. Fortunately by the second day it was drying quickly. The facilities were adequate, showers were free and there always seemed to be hot water. Laundry facilities were available and at the back of the toilet block a row of large sinks with plenty hot water for dishwashing. Someone also seemed to think they were for washing boots. There was a very relaxed atmosphere which was helped by the wardens pleasant easy going manner. He also gave me a couple of Scallops to try. Site fees were ?4.00 per adult, whether in a tent or caravan and children had a reduced rate. There was an extra charge of ?3.00 for an electrical hook-up.
